Abstract A ship or an offshore structure is built by erecting several blocks one by one. To enhance the efficiency, many shipbuilding companies have tried to erect a huge block at once. For example, a ring block which is almost one fifth of the entire ship is built in another facility for block production, and then is transported to the shipyard by being tied up on the barge. To lift this huge block of which weight is more than 2,000 tons, a floating crane has been used until now. However, it took much time to prepare the connection and disconnection of wire ropes. In addition, because the floating crane is greatly affected by weather condition, the operation may be delayed. In order to overcome these drawbacks, a new way of using modular transporters (MTPs) instead of the floating crane has been proposed.
