Abstract Mostly, the ships and offshore plants are divided by several blocks to be erected. Because the block contains several outfitting installed before the erection stage, collision between the blocks is one of the main reasons to delay the operation. Moreover, in case of ships including tanks such as LPG or LNG carrier, the tank should be erected inside the hull which can cause collisions between them during the erection. Therefore, the collision should be carefully checked before the operation. Even though the collision is checked statically, the unexpected collision can be occurred due to the environmental loads. Thus, the collision analysis based on multibody system dynamics is performed in this study. Generally, there are 2 methods for the collision analysis, impulse response method and force-based (penalty) method. Traditionally, the impulse response method has been commonly used in collision analysis. However, it cannot be used to the multibody systems because the method calculates the velocity of the single body directly. Furthermore, the collision forces are not calculated in the impulse response method. Therefore, in this study, the force-based (penalty) method is applied to consider the collisions in multibody systems, and calculate the collision forces. To evaluate the effectiveness of the method, it is applied to LPG tank erection by using floating crane.
