Abstract Escape, evacuation, and rescue (EER) operation is one of vital roles to protect and save personnel in the event of a major accident on offshore oil and gas production platforms. Of this, escape operation refers to the process of moving from a place of danger to a place of safety. This typically involves personnel moving via escape routes from where they are at the time of alarm to muster stations, which are normally located within a temporal refuge, and then to a means of evacuation. During the escape, the operator should provide proper escape routes to minimize potential harm throughout the escape process considering real-time hazard avoidance. This paper suggests a route re-planning algorithm for dynamic escape guidance considering the avoidance of dynamic obstructions in real time. Points of visibility, a graph-based path-finding approach, are adopted to find the path to the destination with the avoidance of obstructions. Various types of hazard such as fire and a leak are considered as obstructions. The proposed algorithm is verified by applying various escape scenarios at the offshore platform considering multiple hazard cases including fire and a leak. Using this algorithm, we expect that all escape routes to muster area, temporary refuges and evacuation stations would be more adequately marked by signage and emergency lighting under the circumstances of additional real-time hazards.
