Abstract Any information of products from shipyards or offshore industry are managed by PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) system. The system can create, store and manage the information from products to process of engineering, fabrication and construction. As amount and complexity of production is increasing, PLM system cannot help managing very large amount of, so called, ‘big data’. Therefore, the needs of applying big data technology to the PLM system have emerged. In this study, a big data platform for a PLM system is proposed and implemented. To evaluate the feasibility of the big data platform, it was applied to material procurement process in an actual shipyard. It is shown that the platform can be effectively connected with PLM systems in shipyard and offshore industry.
