Abstract In this study, a ship initial design CAD system, which is based on non-manifold model and named “EzSHIP", was developed. For the present, EzSHIP is comprised of two sub-systems. One is a hull form CAD system named “EzHULL" to perfonn hull form design, another is a compartment arrangement and ship calculation CAD system named “EzCOMPART" to perfonn compartment modeling and ship calculation. EzHULL supports definition, variation, and fairing of wireframe hull form, which are based on the requirements of hull form designers in shipbuilding company. EzHULL can transform wireframe hull form model into NURBS surface model and non-manifold polyhedron model for compartment modeling. EzCOMPART can generate non-manifold comppartment model by placing many bulkheads in the polyhedron hulll form model generated from the EzHULL. EzCOMPART can also calculate floating position and stability of the ship when compartments are loaded with cargo or some compartments are submerged. EzCOMPART adopts the polyhedron model for compaπment modeling and ship calculation in order to improve the speed and safety of intersection calculation, and the speed of the volume calculation. Finally, to evaluate the applicability of the developed system, it was applied to various ships' hull form and compartment modeling.
