Abstract | The training simulators based on virtual reality (VR) have been popular in ships and offshore structures. For example, there are bridge simulators for training ship operators or crane simulators for training the crane operator on an offshore support vessel. These typical training simulators have the following problems. The simulators are usually large in size and cost a lot because they imitate the actual operation place as they are. They are difficult to modify once they have been installed. Moreover, they can only be used for one purpose and cannot be used for other uses. Some of the existing simulators cannot perform collaboration simulation in which multiple workers participate simultaneously. To overcome the limitations mentioned above, this study proposes a multi-purpose simulator based on the requirements for the various operations in ships and offshores structures. From the requirements, we define technologies to be integrated, and hardware configuration including 6DOF motion platform, motion chair, and treadmill for walking. Finally, we implement three different types of operations such as two voyage simulations and block turn-over simulation by using the proposed simulator. |
