Abstract Hydraulic system that is mounted on ships or offshore structures is required to optimize performance and arrangement simultaneously. It takes a lot of time to optimize because of various design variables and complicated dynamics model. In this study, metamodeling technique was used to formulate the hydraulic dynamic system and finally to optimize design variables. During the optimization, maximum pressure difference of hydraulic system and ejection speed of object used as objective functions, and the maximum acceleration of object, maximum pressure difference of hydraulic system and ejection speed of object used as constraints to optimize three design variables of the hydraulic system. Also, valve profile of hydraulic system is optimized to minimize maximum pressure difference of hydraulic system and maximum acceleration of object. Metamodeling technique is a method to calculate values such as objective function and constraint in a short time. Radial Basis Functions were used in metamodeling and various forms of RBF were tested on this study. As a result, proposed metamodeling method can be effectively utilized to obtain optimized hydraulic system.
