Abstract The digital twin technology is one of the 4th industrial technology, and it has been developed together with other 4th industrial technology such as IoT (Internet of Things) and big data. The technology can be regarded as a set of technologies for managing a product or system, and it aims to operate target products or systems in real time by being merged with the IoT technology. If we create a virtual twin based on the physical twin, it is possible to obtain the simulation data from the virtual twin instead of using the physical twin. It helps for a designer to make better decisions by providing more information for his/her decision. In this study, we propose a digital twin framework which consists of six components; physical twin, virtual twin, big data, analyzer, security, and ICT (Information and Communication Technology). To evaluate the applicability of the proposed framework, we implement a ship navigation simulator. The result shows that the proposed framework can be used to implement effectively the digital twin technology in the field of naval architecture and ocean engineering.
