Abstract 선박의 길이 및 폭방향으로 배치되는 수밀격벽(watertight bulkhead)과 이중저(double bottom) 등으로 선박을 여러 구획으로 나누게 되면 침수 범위를 한정시켜 복원성을 유지하는 데 큰 도움이 된다. 하지만 선박을 과도하게 많은 구획으로 나누는 것은 경제성을 떨어뜨리게 된다. 따라서 손상 복원성 확보와 경제성 사이에서 균형을 이루기 위해 국제 규정도 지속적으로 개정되어 왔다. 본 고에서는 현재 적용되고 있는 손상 복원성 국제 규정을 살펴보고, 특히 이해하기 어려운 SOLAS 확률론적 손상 복원성 규정(Subdivision and Damage Stability:SDS)의 기본 개념을 이해할 수 있도록 해석하였다. 본 고의 내용은 제 1저자가 2012년 대한 조선학회 발간 “선박계산”도서의 대표저자로서 역점을 두었던 5장, 6장의 내용을 요약 정리한 것이다.
