Abstract As autonomous technology for ships is getting improved, route planning (also called route finding) has also become important. For route planning of large commercial ships (e.g., container ship, crude oil carrier, etc.), FOC (Fuel Oil Consumption), weather conditions, seakeeping, etc. are major considerations. In contrast, for route planning of small ships (e.g., yachts and ferries), the characteristics of coastal areas and user preferences should be considered. In addition, the calculation time for generating routes, avoidance of small obstacles (e.g., fishery, buoy), operation regulations in coastal areas are primary considerations. Therefore, we proposed a route planning method for small ships by reflecting the aforementioned considerations. For route planning, firstly, the quadtree structure was used for handling geometrical data and lightning geographical maps. Secondly, the hierarchical A* algorithm was applied for route planning in an extensive area with limited computing resources. These approaches were incorporated to suggest an efficient solution to the route planning for small ships. The proposed method in this study was verified by applying it to various problems for route planning in coastal areas in the Republic of Korea. The result shows the proposed method could yield economic routes.
