Abstract Flooding caused by some accidents such as collision or grounding is one of causes that make a ship sink. According to the magnitude of the flooding, the ship can float with damage in the water or can sink to the seabed. To improve the existing design for the compartment arrangement, to estimate the state of the ship due to flooding, and to investigate causes of accidents in the future, flooding analysis can be used. For this purpose, a method of dynamic flooding analysis in time domain is proposed. The proposed method is based on the equations of motion of the ship. The method includes considerations of the change in the weight and buoyancy of the ship due to flooding, oil spill from the compartments, cargo load in the compartments, and so on. To check the applicability of the proposed method, comparative tests with experiments by other papers are performed.
