Abstract With increasing in an attention about environment, the importance of ship route planning has also been increased. For determining the economical ship route planning, the waypoint and the velocity are needed. In many studies, the waypoint and the velocity are obtained from optimization procedure independently. However, seen from the fact that the velocity is determined by time derivative of route, the waypoint and the velocity should be optimized simultaneously. To find the solution of simultaneous optimization, a method for determining an economical ship route planning is proposed in this study. With based on the weather information, geographical information and ship information, the fuel consumption is calculated by the waypoint and the velocity. To evaluate the applicability of the proposed method, a prototype program was developed and applied to several routing problems in various ocean area. The proposed method shows better performances in comparison to other route finding methods.
