Abstract As climate change, Arctic sea ice extent has been declining and the open water areas are expanding rapidly during the summer season in the Northern Sea Route (NSR), thus the opening of the NSR could offer the great possibilities to the shipping industry and shipbuilders. The NSR is navigated by merchant vessels which are equipped with a specially strengthened hull and sides to sail between Europe and Asia during the summer and autumn periods. To ensure ship safe navigation on the NSR the risk assessment should be conducted before the initial stages of voyage planning. The Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) have been developing the safe voyage planning system named KRISO Arctic safe Routing System (KARS). The main target of the KARS is ensuring ship safe navigation including the optimal route planning and increasing of the ship energy efficiency in the water area of the NSR. In this study, the main functions of the KARS were introduced and validation test was conducted onboard the Korean icebreaker ARAON in the East Siberian Sea. The ice trial results were summarized and the application possibility of the KARS was discussed.
