Abstract Shipping companies have their policies to operate ships. The operation records are not disclosed to the others, because those are directly related to the efficiency of shipping and costs. It is necessary to analyze the operation patterns of other ship owners to reduce operating costs. It is also required to compare the performance of ships that are currently in operation to build new ships or purchase used ones. In this study, the operational characteristics are obtained by analyzing the Automatic Identification System (AIS) data on container ships. The operational characteristics per owners are compared, and the analysis of the characteristics of the container ships for each shipyard is carried out. As the AIS data is saved in every few seconds, the amount of the data is so large. Therefore, the big data technology is used for the analysis. As a result, it could be possible to estimate the operational characteristics of shipping companies. Also, the performance of each ship could be compared. The analytical techniques in this study can be used for more efficient operation analysis and can be applied to the development of technologies to improve the performance of ships.
