Abstract One of the most important factors of wreck removal is the estimation of the total lifting force, because it is the basis of the decisions on the wreck removal plan and equipment selection. For this, the soil-resistant force that allows the wreck to escape from the seabed sediment should be calculated. After the wreck escapes from the seabed, the current force acts on it from the seabed to near the sea surface. If floating cranes are used, the dynamic effects due to the floating crane motion should be considered while lifting the wreck. In this study, numerical analysis of wreck removal based on multibody system dynamics is performed when the wreck is lifted by two floating cranes with the same lifting capacity. The total lifting force of the floating cranes is calculated according to various ocean environmental conditions. Three kinds of seabed sediments are used to calculate different soil-resistant forces. Hydrodynamic forces from regular waves with several wave amplitudes, periods, and heading angles are applied to the floating cranes to understand the effect of each condition. In addition, irregular waves are also considered to analyze the total lifting force, which are more realistic cases in the ocean. As a result, it is checked whether the total lifting forces obtained from numerical analysis exceed the criteria for safe operations.
